Cup triumph one week, European grief the next.
But Chelsea have no time to feel sorry for themselves as high-flying Southampton visit this weekend in the league.
Wednesday night’s Champions League exit at the hands of Paris St Germain (losing to the French on away Gauls, so to speak) was sweet revenge for PSG after their defeat to the Blues in last year’s quarter-finals.
But Chelsea should have done better on a night when striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off for an ugly tackle after half an hour.
The Blues had had a full week to prepare for the game, but looked tense and out of sorts, despite the return to midfield of Nemanja Matic after suspension.
With PSG down to 10 men, it should have been the French side that started tiring as the game went to extra time, but Chelsea began sitting too deep, almost inviting their opponents to attack.
Former Stamford Bridge defender David Luiz forced extra time with a bullet header, but the game looked to have gone Chelsea’s way after Thiago Silva handled and Eden Hazard dinked home the penalty.
Yet a couple of inspired substitutions by Laurent Blanc gave PSG belief and fresh pace, and at times it looked as if Chelsea were the team with a man short.
Jose Mourinho conceded that the Blues had not been good enough, as defeat prompted a flurry of Berlin hotel cancellations from fans who had been dreaming of the final in early June.
“We need to react; we have a Premier League to win,” said Jose, turning his attention to Sunday.
Chelsea will still get their open-top bus parade if they can add the Premier League title to their League Cup triumph, but it needs better focus.
Didier Drogba, on as a sub on Wednesday night – his 37th birthday – could not change the game, and it looks unlikely his contract will be renewed in the summer.
