Students were buzzing with excitement when they had the opportunity to take part in their school’s first spelling bee.

And some eager Broomfield House pupils even dressed as bees as they took to the stage on Thursday, March 1, to show off their spelling abilities in an American style knock-out contest.

Headteacher Norton York said: “The aim of our spelling bee week has been to shine the spotlight on spelling, arguably the Cinderella subject of the English curriculum.

“Portraying spelling as a competitive skill makes it more exciting for the children and encourages them to work harder at improving this aspect of their literacy.”

The spelling bee marked the end of a week of word focused competitions and quizzes involving every child at the Kew school.
