Richmond may have seen the last of the snow but temperatures are still set to drop well below freezing today, forecasters said.

The borough was blanketed in snow yesterday as London saw overnight snowfalls of up to 15cm.

South West Trains commuters faced major disruption as the big freeze gripped the capital.

Commuters travelling on trains serving Richmond and Twickenham faced delays of up to an hour-and-a-half.

South West Trains warned passengers to check their route before travelling today.

Temperatures were expected to plummet to -4C last night, and today is set to be a chilly -2C. The weekend will bring slightly warmer weather, with temperatures of up to 5C.

Richmond Council is running full community meals and homecare services, despite up heavy snow falling in some parts of London.

All schools are open but the council advised parents to contact schools for find out whether they are open.

The authority said its lorries had spread more than 110 tonnes of grit on the borough’s roads this week.

Councillor Clare Head, cabinet member for traffic at Richmond Council, said: “Keeping the main roads open so people can get to work or drive the children to school is one of the most valued local council services and it’s important to us that we do it right.”

Gatwick was closed until 6am this morning and Heathrow and London City airports were also hit by severe delays and cancellations.
