The name of one of the world’s top chefs is to appear over the door of a new Teddington eaterie - but he is unlikely to be seen in the town.
The King’s Head, in High Street, previously part pub and part French-themed restaurant l’auberge, will open as a Brasserie Blanc next month.
It will bear the name of French chef Raymond Blanc, the 60-year-old French chef who has won two Michelin stars, however he is unlikely to be seen in Teddington.
John Lederer, managing director of the Brasserie Blanc chain, said: “He might pop in but I don’t think it’s right to say he will be there.
“We can’t bandy his name around, he is on the board and he calls me often but we created Brasserie Blanc five years ago and we are very keen on not going down the route of putting a name on it and then the chef doesn’t do anything.
“He can’t be there every day [because of his commitments elsewhere].”
Mr Lederer said an opening date had not yet been set but lots of work had been done. He said the place had been “gutted” and would be refurbished.
Richmond Council approved a planning application for the renovation earlier this summer after it drew no public responses and was approved by the Teddington Society.
Residents are said to be broadly in support of the brasserie but have noted it will be in competition with pubs and restaurants offering similar meals in close proximity.
Mr Lederer added: “Teddington is a lovely area, it has a real High Street rather than a long list of big names.
“It is not London but has a London feel and has what London lost years ago - a sense of community.
“We have brasseries in similar places, where there is a sense of local feeling, we can be part of it."
Mr Blanc, who featured in BBC TV series The Restaurant, said he wanted the brasserie to be a “central part of the community”.
