Richmond’s youth magazine will be published online from now on and new faces are needed for the editorial team.
Teenagers were left reeling by Richmond Council’s announcement that the July edition of Outskirts magazine would be the last printed.
Councillor Nick True, leader of Richmond Council, said the authority could not afford the £36,000 a year cost of producing and printing the magazine. However, it has been confirmed the next edition will be a 16-page magazine containing features, interviews and news, which will go online.
The magazine will available at richmond.gov.uk/outskirts and is due to go live from December.
Councillor Christine Percival, Richmond Council cabinet member for education, youth and children’s services, said the reaction from young people - which included Amy Feltham, 17, from Hampton, who was involved in a campaign to save the magazine - made Outskirts’ value clear to the authority.
She added: We have decided to continue the publication but without the costly 90,000 hard copies as before.
“These new arrangements will allow us to continue the production process as before but at a much reduced cost.
“For the longer term we want to work with the young people to explore how we can develop sponsorship and other forms of community support for Outskirts.”
The council needs about 15 new people to continue the production of Outskirts and anyone interested should visit the website.
