A business man who quit his job to help African women work their way out of poverty has been shortlisted for the Alternative Rich List.
Peter Ryan, from Chiswick, gave up his career as manager of a French food company to set up the MicroLoan Foundation (MLF) in 2002.
MLF has helped 40,000 women in rural Malawi, Namibia and Zambia to start small businesses by giving them loans and providing training and financial planning.
The Alternative Rich List, recognises achievements in the not-for-profit sector.
Mr Ryan said: "In a society where the persuit of money is so celebrated, it's incredibly refreshing to see an award like the Alternative Rich List which nods it's head to those making social contributions.
"It's a marvellous step forward as it's almost too easy to get caught up in the trappings of modern life and forget about helping those who are less fortunate."
"It's a real honour to have been nominated and shortlisted alongside such well respected figures from the charity world.
"Both myself and the fantastic team behind The MicroLoan Foundation are inspired to know that our work in Africa has been recognised."
