The Electoral Commission has confirmed it will review Zac Goldsmith's election spending.

Its decision came after a joint investigation by Channel 4 and the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.

The MP for Richmond and north Kingston had his expenses put under the spotlight by the channel, but has denied any wrongdoing.

Mr Goldsmith said: "I welcome the review and both my agent and I will help it in every way possible.

"It will find that we were absolutely scrupulous at every stage in ensuring that our election spending complied with the letter and spirit of the rules, and that we followed the formula which we and all MPs and candidates were given to the letter."

The report raised questions about whether the Conservative MP kept within the £11,003 limit during the 23-day run-up to polling day, as suggested in his returns.

A statement from the Electoral Commission said: "The assessment of the information indicated that there was the possibility of a failure to comply with the Representation of the People Act 1983 and that further enquiries should be made in order to establish the facts of the matter."

An outcome of the review is expected within 90 days.

The Electoral Commission can decide there is no case to answer, seek a response from Mr Goldsmith or launch a full investigation using its formal powers.
