These are the first images of how the proposed rebuilding of Twickenham station will look.

The £40m development will provide a new station with modern facilities as well as an opportunity to build shops and restaurants around the revitalised station plaza.

Proposed by Solum Regeneration, a joint venture between Network Rail and Kier Property, the development will also see about 170 apartments built in three blocks above the station.

Nigel Carr from Solum Regeneration, said: “More than 6,000 people pass through Twickenham station every day, a figure that swells to over 30,000 on international match days.

“The redevelopment will provide the opportunity to create a sense of arrival for Twickenham, to provide modern station facilities with increased capacity and to open up the area next to the neglected River Crane.

“We very much want to hear from residents and to consider local views before submitting a planning application later in the year.”

It was revealed the development will be of a similar height to neighbouring Regal House, which is set to be turned into a Travelodge with work due to begin this summer.

However, residents living around the station raised concerns about a second high rise building in Twickenham, claiming it will block their sunlight, tarnish their view and see them plagued with noisy and lengthy building work.

A new consultation document, which proposes giving the authority’s planning committee guidance on how any applications for the redevelopment of the Twickenham station area should be considered, is due to be discussed by Richmond Council’s cabinet on Monday.

Residents and other stakeholders will have the chance to read the proposals and say if they agree with the ideas or not.

Councillor Virginia Morris, cabinet member for environment and planning, said: The aim of the guidance is to provide greater clarity for everyone.

“We are not against new developments or indeed tall buildings, they have their place but this is Richmond upon Thames, not Croydon upon Thames or the City upon Thames.”

Full details of the proposals can be found in the cabinet meeting papers for Monday at richmond.gov.uk/calendar_of_meetings.

The station plans will be on display to the public between 2.30pm and 8pm next Friday and between 10am and 4pm next Saturday at the Hyde Room, York House, Twickenham.

Solum intends to submit a planning application for the main development project later in the year.
