The Kew Bridge eco-village is no more.

Bailiffs today descended on the former Scottish Widows site, in Brentford, at about 7.45am to boot out squatters – but one eco-warrior was clearly not ready to leave.

In a final act of defiance, a villager known only as Yosev climbed on top of a 20ft wooden tower and has spent hours ignoring police pleas to come down.

A small crowd of evicted eco-villagers gathered on Kew Bridge to watch the lofty sit-in. Representatives from land-owner and developer St George were also present to ensure a possession order made at Brentford County Court on May 7 was enforced.

Eco-protestor Charlotte Summers, who has been living on the site since squatters scaled a wall and moved in on June 6, last year, said they had been expecting bailiffs to arrive ever since the court order took effect on May 14.

She said: “They knocked and said ‘it’s the bailiffs, you are being evicted, you’ve got five minutes to get your stuff ready’.

“Yosev will stay up there for as long as he can – he’s the last man standing on site.

“The bailiffs even managed to pull his trousers off so he was standing up there half-naked for a while.”

However, the 22-year-old admitted the curtain had closed on their time in Brentford.

She said: “It is sad. We will miss Brentford – all the locals, all the friends we’ve made and the children who have come in.

“Hopefully we will have a lasting effect on the people of Brentford. We have tried as much as we can to bring this community together.

“Hopefully we have made a little bit of a difference here. It’s not the end, it’s just the beginning of something new.

“We’ve got lots of sites, so we will be back.”

Ms Summers revealed after the eviction process there was a plan for some villagers to move to a Transport for London-owned piece of land in Hanworth Road, Hounslow, which was taken over by eco-protestors earlier this month.

A spokeswoman for St George said: “At the request of the squatters we gave them a further week to vacate, agreeing that they would leave on May 21.

“On checking the site on May 22, we noted some of the squatters had still not left.

“We are clearly disappointed with this as we had allowed them extra time as they requested.

“We were therefore left with no other option but to implement the possession order.”

In February Hounslow Council gave St George planning permission to build 164 residential units, a fitness suite and business centre, retail and office space and a cafe or restaurant on the site.
