Schools re-opened today and transport services were returning to normal as the snowy weather loosened its grip on the capital.

Disruption caused by last week's snow is unlikely to continue this week, said the Met Office.

But forecaster Barry Gromett said the thaw would be a "slow process".

He said: "Daytime temperatures will be staying cold.

"There will be a climb in temperatures of 2 to 3°C, which we didn't see last week, but the overnight frosts will continue and on Wednesday morning we may see another small outbreak of snow."

All schools in the boroughs of Richmond and Hounslow were open today.

Rubbish and recycling collections were due to take place as normal this week, although disruptions may continue due to the snow.

South West Trains was today running a slightly reduced timetable, and said the continuing cold weather could mean delays and cancelations for passengers.

Commuters are advised to check services before they travel by calling 08453 017 641 or visiting southwesttrains.co.uk.

Bus routes were operating as usual today, with the exception of routes 110 and H22.

The services will be diverted between 9.30pm and 5.30am, from tonight, because of resurfacing work at the Hospital Bridge Roundabout. The works take place until January 14.
