AN ISLEWORTH community worker is hoping to lose pounds to make pounds as he diets to raise money for local rugby players.

Phil Jones, a community development officer at the London Bronco Rugby League team's Osterley office, was recently promoted to player performance manager with the responsibility for the development systems for junior players in the area. However, he was so shocked when he saw the accompanying publicity photo that he was stirred into action.

Phil said: "I didn't realise how much I had expanded over the last couple of years - at the moment I am a prime candidate for 'Fat Club'.

And with the lads (Academy players) working so hard, I decided that I too needed to get back into shape."

He is now hoping to lose twenty pounds over the next two months and is looking for sponsors to support him.

The money raised by the Broncos Pound for Pound Challenge will go to the Junior Academy and the Broncos Booster Junior Development Fund.

Phil explained: "Our Academy programme does cost money to run, particularly all the smaller costs which really add up, like transport to and from games, kit, health and safety necessities and the like.

"This gives any Broncos supporter, or general sports enthusiast, the chance to help a worthy cause."

Phil was weighed in at the Broncos' last match against Salford Reds at Griffin Park, Brentford, with the scales tipping 16st 4lbs.

His performance can be monitored via the team's website and a final weigh-in will take place on May 28, when the Broncos play at home to Castleford Tigers.

You can sponsor Phil per pound lost or donate a fixed sum by emailing him at development@londonbroncos.co.uk and giving your name, contact number and sponsorship amount.

All sponsors will be named in the match day magazine on May 28.
