TWO of the most famous names in British Science and Technology visited a girls' school in Hounslow this week as part of the National Science Week.
Professor Lord Robert Winston, a leading fertility expert and BBC presenter, and Trevor Bayliss OBE, a celebrated inventor famed for devising the wind-up radio, spoke to girls aged 14-18 at The Green School about their experiences and specialist subjects.
The visits, to The Green School in Isleworth are aimed at promoting science and technology within the school and giving the students an opportunity to find out more about work in this area.
Lord Winston gave a talk entitled Can science make you happy' on Monday and Trevor Bayliss was set to speak on Why Invent?' on Friday, March19.
Throughout the week, additional lectures and activities are planned, including workshops on construction and the environmental impacts on the school, run by Carillion and a debate on Sexism in Science' inspired by Susan Greenfield (Director of the Royal Institute).
Alison Williams, head of science at The Green School, said: "Science is often seen as male dominated but there is just as much potential, if not more, for the girls here to be successful in this field. The activities we have arranged for this week, including the talks by Lord Winston and Trevor Bayliss, will all engage the minds of the girls and allow them to understand how science is a serious career option."
Pam Butterfield, headteacher, said: "There is nothing to stop girls from excelling in science or technology and science week will give our girls the incentive to achieve the heights of our special guests. Both Lord Winston and Trevor Bayliss are outstanding leaders in their fields and I'm sure the students here will be enthralled by their talks."
