PASSENGERS checking in to Heathrow's Terminals 1 and 2 are being subjected to a particularly depressing experience', according to the Holiday Which? report.
The report, published for the Consumer Association, investigates the differences between bigger regional airports and smaller local ones. But while Heathrow's check-in areas are seen as areas for improvement, the airport is praised by the report for its shopping and eating establishments.
Terminal 3 was named as having the best choice in food for passengers, with restaurants offering a variety of international cuisine. Diners can sample the delights at the Shakespeare Ale House, Sbarro New York Italian pizzeria, the Caviar House and the award winning TGI Friday, as well as picking up British classic foods such as Marmite and Branston Pickle at the Taste of Britain shop. Terminal 4 was named as having the best airside shopping, including outlets for Cartier, Christian Dior and Burberry.
A Heathrow spokesperson said: "We always welcome constructive comments and are delighted that the majority of the Consumer Association report is positive. However, it is important to bare in mind the size of Heathrow compared to other regional airports. Despite significant investment and modernisation, the buildings are 35 and 50 years old and will inevitably look less than new."
