POLICE in the borough are issuing a serious warning to all mobile phone users, as many are being conned by a clever scam.
A missed call shows on a mobile phone, often with the number 0709 020 3840 - but the last four digits may vary. People who call the number back are charged £50 per minute. They complain about their phone bills once they realise the cost of the call but apparently it is completely legal.
Police are warning the public not to call back numbers beginning with 0709 - as you will be liable for the cost.
This type of scam also operates with a text message informing you of a voice mail waiting to be collected by calling back on an offered number.
