A TWICKENHAM school has raised an amazing £3,000 to help raise cancer awareness, after recently losing two teachers to ovarian cancer.
Pupils at Newland House School on Hampton Road took part in Macmillan Cancer Relief's sponsored silence, the Big Hush' in February, raising £3,179.
Their former teachers Angela Wildgoose and Lesley Hogan had been involved with the school for over 20 years and benefited greatly from the support given by Macmillan nurses during their illness.
The school held a memorial service on February 10 for Lesley, who died in December, Douglas Arnold, deputy headteacher at the school, said: "The bravery with which Angela and Lesley approached their illness affected us in a very positive way.
The Big Hush provided a great opportunity for the pupils to remember them and help other people with cancer and their families.
"They have done amazingly well. Cancer is an illness that concerns us all and should be brought out into the open as much as possible."
Paul Stein, Macmillan fundraising manager said: "We are really grateful to have the support of Newland House and glad that their teachers were helped by Macmillan nurses.
"Four in ten of us will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in our lives, so the demand for more cancer services has never been higher.
"Macmillan Cancer Relief is therefore raising £2.4 million to fund more nurses, doctors and other health professionals across Greater London, including a Macmillan chemotherapy nurse at the West Middlesex Hospital."
