A LOCAL community centre has been renamed to commemorate the work of the man who helped to create it.

A ceremony was held on Monday at the Coach House Disability Living Centre in Feltham to honour its former service manager for older people, Gerard Calen, who died last year. As part of the occasion, the building was renamed the Calen Centre at the Coach House in his memory.

The centre aims to give elderly or disabled people more life choices. Visitors to the centre can try out products and explore independent living solutions with experienced occupational therapists.

Cllr Gurmail Lal, executive member for supporting vulnerable people, said that Mr Calen had worked hard to establish the centre.

Cllr Lal added: "The centre was his idea, and it has gone from strength to strength. Unfortunately, Mr Calen died before the centre was officially opened in July last year.

"We want this centre to bear his name to provide a lasting memory."

Mr Calen was also responsible for the opening and continual development of the Roshni Unit for Asian Older People in Feltham.

Friends and family gathered at Monday's ceremony on Harlington Road West to celebrate his work.
