The six daughters of a care home resident who died a week before her 87th birthday have built a garden in her memory.
Dorothy Steel, from Cranford, was living at Feltham Dene residential home, in Spring Road, Feltham, when she passed away on September 15 last year.
Her daughters Terry Walters, Jacky O’Malley, Jennifer Steel, Pauline Pole, Annette De la Nougerede and Lesley Whayman decided they wanted to commemorate their mum, and asked the home if they could make a garden.
A year later – on what would have been Mrs Steel’s 88th birthday – family, staff and residents were joined by Hounslow mayor Paul Lynch on Tuesday for the official opening ceremony.
Nina Varcoe, manager at Feltham Dene care home, said: “We briefly knew Dorothy as someone who enjoyed her own company, watched a little television, liked crosswords and word searches and was often seen knitting or crocheting.
“Clearly a family woman, Dorothy had almost more grandchildren and great-grandchildren than could fit into this garden.
“What you see before you this afternoon is a wonderful tribute to Dorothy Steel and somewhere that residents and visitors alike can enjoy throughout the seasons.”
Mrs Steel lived in Hanworth before marrying in 1942.
She and her husband moved to a farm in Cranford in 1958 where she worked in the shop.
The couple raised a family of six girls before her husband died in 1993.
Visitors got the chance to look at a gallery of “before and after” pictures of the garden exhibited along the corridor, along with photographs of Mrs Steel and her family.
They then enjoyed a cellist performance, before Mrs Steel’s family formally handed over the garden and declared it open.
