Engineers are due to inspect a bridge in Barnes to assess the extent of structural repairs.
Richmond Council closed the southbound carriageway of teh bridge in Rocks Lane and introduced temporary traffic signals on Friday after a number of bricks broke away from the structure and fell on to the railway lines below.
Network Rail said the bridge, built between 1885 and 1886, was structurally sound but further investigations needed to be carried out.
Both lanes of the road are now open to traffic but work is due to start tonight to assess the extent of repairs.
Temporary traffic lights, restricting traffic to a single lane, will be in operation after rush hour.
