RENA Salmon, the woman convicted of the murder of her husband's pregnant lover in a Chiswick beauty salon, spoke this week about her friendship with Maxine Carr.

In an interview with Julie Bindel for The Guardian, she admitted that she was "still shocked I've ended up in this situation".

Ms Bindel, who works for Justice for Women, which takes on cases of imprisoned battered women, has pledged to help Salmon, because she suspects that Salmon has been a victim of sexism in the criminal justice system.

Regarding Maxine Carr, who Rena calls Max' after they befriended each other in Bullwood Hall, she says: "I'm the woman the papers say is evil at the moment, although Max took the crown for a while."

Salmon is awaiting permission to appeal her conviction and sentence of 14 years for the murder of Lorna Stewart. Salmon claims that she always intended to kill herself, and told the women's campaigner: "She was my best friend, and I miss her.. I firmly believe I deserve to be punished for my crime, but I will always deny it was murder."
