Traders and residents are calling for an end to confusion in a road where parking restrictions change 14 times in just 200m.

Shopkeepers in Hampton’s Station Road have told Richmond Council the baffling parking restrictions and a lack of spaces is affecting their businesses, as customers are picking up tickets and blaming them.

Residents have also called for fewer yellow lines, more parking bays and restrictions to prevent commuters parking all day without damaging businesses.

There are currently restrictions in place most of the way along Station Road, which runs from Hampton station to High Street, but in some areas there is no parking between 8.30am and 6.30pm Monday to Saturday, in others there is a one-hour restriction between 11am and noon Monday to Friday and in others drivers can stop for 20 minutes only between 8.30am and 6.30pm Monday to Friday.

Parking is allowed on the pavement in some parts of the road but not in others and yellow lines have been painted through parking bays to add to confusion.

John Soones, a resident, said: “The parking restrictions change 14 times in 200m, it is any wonder even residents get caught out?

“If there were sufficient spaces there would be enough turnover to accommodate the needs of the convenience store, post office, hairdressers etc.”

Terry Dodd, who owns the All in one Service Bar, said: “The council don’t know what they are doing – this is only a small village, they don’t have these sorts of restrictions in Hampton Hill and that is a high street.

“This is a few shops trying to make a living, all we want is time for people to park – customers don’t want a £50 fine just for buying a key.

“I’m sure customers are confused, I’m confused.”

Claire Matthews, who owns the Tail End of Hampton pet shop, said: “They have changed it so many times over the years.

“Customers go mad if they get tickets – they say they will never come again.”

Councillor David Trigg, Richmond Council cabinet member for traffic, transport and parking, said the waiting times in the road were set at the request of the businesses.

He added: “We were aware having different restrictions in close proximity to each other could cause confusion and we discussed this directly with the businesses, but owners said they were happy with the proposed waiting times.

“We are now consulting on putting more parking bays in place in the road to make it even easier for shoppers to use these services.”
