Speeding motorists on a notorious road are finally set to be slowed down by road humps following a five-and-a-half year campaign by residents.
Petitioners first asked Hounslow Council in January 2004 to clamp down on dangerous driving in Sutton Road, Heston.
More than five years later, work is finally due to start next month on building humps and speed activated signs, along with raised platforms at each end of the road, in a £51,000 project.
Nick Marbrow, treasurer of Heston Residents’ Association, accused the council of ignoring residents’ concerns, and believed the authority would not have taken action if campaigners had not been so persistent.
He said: “Throughout it was clear the council didn’t want to get involved, they couldn’t be bothered. Eventually it was decided to set up a working party made up of residents, but then the officer simply didn’t bother calling that group together.
“Every email was ignored, and I’m talking about a lot of emails.”
He said he had seen motorcycles speeding at about 80mph down the 30mph street, adding: “It’s a nightmare out there, if I’m working out in the front garden doing what should be a reasonably pleasant passtime, there are vehicles tearing along there.”
Stanmislaw Lochowski, 82, who lives in the road, said a crash on the bend outside his house led to the car ending up in his neighbour’s garden.
He said: “It’s such a sharp bend, people cannot see anything. Something needs to be done.”
A 73-year-old neighbour, who asked not to be named, said she was nearly run over last week, and two years ago a car smashed into four parked cars, including a new Mercedes.
She said: “It’s a wonder there have not been any children knocked down.”
Mr Marbrow said the council also needed to deal with the huge volume of traffic on Sutton Road during rush hour, and called for the authority to widen the exit at the Heston Road end, and to move the bus lane away from the junction.
A spokesman for Hounslow Council said it had a backlog of roads that needed improvement works, and it had to prioritise funding.
