The Environment Agency tonight issued a flood warning for Richmond.
As torrential fell across west London, the EA warned of potential flooding in areas around nine rivers in London, including Richmond, Kingston and Wandsworth.
More heavy rainfall is expected overnight.
Flood incident management team leader, Lee James, said: "While we are not currently anticipating property flooding from rivers, we are urging everyone to be aware of the possible risk of localised flooding in some areas, particularly south-east London.
"Our staff have been out checking flood defences and clearing culverts of any debris to allow them to cope with the forecast heavy rainfall. We are monitoring the situation closely and gangs have been out at a number of sites clearing trash screens in the capital.
"We want to remind people that any flood water can be dangerous, and they should not try to walk or drive through flood water. We will continue to monitor the situation as rain spreads across the area this evening."
