Lippy Rolling Stones frontman Sir Mick Jagger realised You Can’t Always Get What You Want after he unsuccessfully tried to buy a vintage ice cream van last weekend.

The Richmond resident spotted the beautifully restored 1954 Morris J-type van when out for a stroll with his son on Wandsworth Common and enquired whether he could use it to Gimme Shelter from the hot sun.

The van’s owner, Giuseppe Della Camera, spent 10 years and £35,000 restoring the old banger to its former glory after he found it on a farm where it was used to house chickens - Little Red Roosters no doubt.

The Streatham resident reportedly: “I was working on Wandsworth Common when Sir Mick came up with his son and bought a couple of ice creams.

“He told me he’d really fallen in love with my van and asked me if I would consider selling it. I was stunned when he offered me £100,000.”

But Mr Camera clearly had Sympathy for the old Devil when he said: “Sir Mick has got seven children and I think he probably wanted my van to entertain his grandchildren.”

Despite promising not to Paint it Black, Mr Camera turned down Sir Mick’s offer because he had promised daughter Alessia, 12, that he would one day drive her to her wedding in it.

So no ice cream van for the Honky Tonk Man, whose wealth was estimated at £190m in the 2009 Sunday Times Rich List, but at least the wirey rocker managed to get a refreshing 40 Licks from his tasty cornetto.
