Emily Piper’s article strikes a cord and there is certainly less of a sense of community now than I remember from my childhood. People lead such busy lives, juggling work and family life and maybe some new residents are too shy or don’t want to join what they perceive as established “cliques” and just want to shut their front door on the world at the end of a busy week.
The demographics of the road in which I live have changed considerably since I moved to Twickenham eighteen years ago. Most of the elderly people have passed away and young couples and families have moved in. It has always been an extremely friendly road and I am pleased that it continues to be so, although there are a few who prefer to keep themselves to themselves.
Neighbourhood Watch is a good way of meeting new residents and looking out for the elderly, single or vulnerable. I am a Co-ordinator and find that most people are glad to be part of a Neighbourhood Watch. They don’t have to do anything but know that if there is anyone suspicious in the road, or anyone has any concerns, they can email or ring. Email is a quick and efficient way of communicating information to residents and I print off hard copies for those who do not have internet access. For more information about joining an existing scheme or setting one up in your road, check out www.neighbourhoodwatch.net or contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team.
In addition to Neighbourhood Watch, I created a planted area in the road. This consists of four trees (subsequently adopted as part of the Council’s Adopt a Tree initiative), numerous flowerbeds and a wildlife and wildflower garden. Other residents contribute seeds and plants and therefore the area constantly evolves throughout the seasons. This little green oasis is a welcome break in the line of terraced houses and has brought many people together who would not otherwise have met. To date we have won eight Conservation and Environment awards for our efforts and hope that we can continue to enjoy and enhance this pocket of green space.
I know there are many other roads in the Borough where there is a great sense of community too. Long may it continue.
