Plans to build 170 homes on the former Scottish Widow site near Kew Bridge moved a step closer this week.

A 21-day public consultation, which gave residents the chance to view amended plans for the development, in Kew Bridge Road, ended on Monday.

It followed a consultation last June by developer St George, which proposed a mixed development on the site, including 170 homes, a fitness suite and business centre, a cafe/restaurant and the use of arches four and five under the bridge for a boat club.

However, after a number of issues were raised at a meeting in January between St George and Hounslow Council, a new amended proposal was submitted last month.

Changes include reducing the number of homes to 164, along with cutting the size of the commercial floor area and the number of car parking spaces.

But the amendments for the development on the site, which is close to the Thames and the Grade II-listed Kew Bridge, have again failed to impress a number of Brentford residents.

In a draft letter sent to the council, Brentford Community Council (BCC) called for the amended scheme to be refused as it argued it failed to meet the brief or objections, submitted to the council in a six-page letter last June.

Speaking on behalf of the group, chairman of the planning consultative committee, Dennis Browne, said: “We welcome the amendments made to the scheme, but we consider they still do not meet the objections raised by the BCC in 2008.

“Despite the changes made, the application remains an uninspired design, which we consider is not worthy of a site of such exceptional importance.”

Concerns included worries the application failed to improve the safety of the busy Kew Bridge junction, cycle parking will not meet TfL standards and the scheme offered no affordable housing.

The site has been a bone of contention and years of planning applications have failed to see a favoured concrete plan materialise.

Previous plans for the site included a doughnut-shaped lay-out and a design referred to by some Brentford residents as “from the Soviet Block”.

St George was not available to comment.

The report from the consultation will go before the Isleworth, Brentford and Chiswick area committee for discussion in May.
