Two canoeists are preparing for an overnight paddling mission in memory of their friend.
Richmond Canoe Club members Randall Watson, of Wellesley Road, Twickenham, and Russ Dawkins, from Staines, are due to set off on their eighth 125-mile non-stop canoe race from Devizes in Wiltshire to Westminster Bridge on Friday.
The race attracts competitors from across the world.
Mr Watson said: “It's the Mount Everest of canoe racing with 20 hours of endurance pursuit. We are looking forward to it and of course to raising money for the specialist unit at St George’s which provided invaluable support and care to Alex and his family.”
The pair will be paddling in friend Alexis Gohar’s canoe. Alexis died last year of a brain tumour, aged 45.
Money raised will go to the endocrine unit at St George’s Hospital, Tooting, which cared for and treated Alexis.
Mr Dawkins said: “Alex was a fantastic guy and a great friend. In 1994 he was diagnosed with a tumour on his pituitary gland which left him blind in one eye and partially sighted in the other.
"He paddled for a further 13 years yet was still more than a match for most fully sighted racers. He competed internationally on a World Cup level, coached juniors and volunteered in schools.
"He was a remarkable man and athlete and we will be using his canoe in this race as a tribute to him.”
