A Brentford biker has successfully cycled her way across Mexico in memory of her father, who died after a battle with cancer.

Kim Alexander, 25, tackled the gruelling 610km journey with 45 other cyclists, and together they raised a total of £131,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Ms Alexander raised an impressive £4,364 alone and paid for the trip out of her own pocket as a thank you to the Macmillan nurses who cared for her father, Jim Alexander, who died from a brain tumour last April at the age of 69.

She said: “It was a fantastic journey and very rewarding in so many ways. The group worked incredibly well as a team and it was inspiring to see such mutual encouragement at the really hard bits.”

One of her most gruelling experiences came on the third day of the eight-day trip when the group were faced with the challenge of climbing 4,425km over a distance of 57km.

Ms Alexander said: “As we reached the top of the hill, over 4,800km above sea level, the altitude began to have a greater effect, making it harder to breathe, virtually impossible to talk and difficult to complete a logical train of thought.

“It was all worth it, though, for me to be able to emerge from the cloud at the summit being able to think ‘I’ve made it, for my dad’ it was an emotional moment.

“The feeling of reaching the Pacific as a group after those eight gruelling days was one of incredible elation.

"There were so many different reasons that had motivated people to undertake the challenge, and so many inspiring stories told along the way, that to achieve our physical goal was fantastic.”

The group are continuing their fundraising for a further three months in a bid to raise as much cash as possible for the charity.
