An exhibition of Oscar-winning costumes has gone on display at the house Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, described as “my earthly paradise”.
The outfits from the film The Duchess, staring Keira Knightly and Ralph Fiennes, will be exhibited at Chiswick House this month.
The lavish period drama tells the story of the loveless marriage between the 18th century aristocrat Georgiana Caven- dish and the fifth Duke of Devonshire.
Chiswick House was passed to the ownership of the duke in 1788 who initiated a series of major changes to the houses and gardens, including knocking down the earlier Jacobean house at the location.
Georgiana’s influences can be seen at the house today, including the bust of Napoleon which she brought to the house – an indication of her fondness for politics.
A total of 14 outfits from the film, which had scenes shot at Osterley House, will be displayed in the elegant apartments of the house, including the red dress worn by Georgiana (played by Knightley) when she drunkenly knocks over a candelabra and sets her wig on fire.
The outfits were created by designer Michael O’Connor, who won this year’s Oscar for Best Costume Design.
He said: “It’s a privilege to be invited to exhibit the costumes from The Duchess at Chiswick House.
“The costumes were designed with an eye on reality and accuracy. I would always imagine Georgiana’s surroundings and environment including rooms, furniture and decoration.
“It is satisfying to know that the costumes are installed in one of the houses where over two centuries ago one can imagine them actually being worn.”
The Duchess at Chiswick exhibition opened on Wednesday and runs daily until the end of the month.
Free Georgiana tours will take place every Sunday at 2pm for visitors to learn more about the celebrated beauty and socialite.
Sarah Finch-Crisp, director of Chiswick House and Gardens Trust, said: “It’s a wonderful opportunity to make the connection between the enthralling story of Georgiana, dubbed the Empress of Fashion by contemporary media, and the house and gardens, which she refurbished and entertained in.”
The Duchess at Chiswick exhibition will run 10am to 5pm every day until April 30. Admission is £4.40 for adults, £3.70 for concessions, £2.20 for children or a family ticket for £11.
Group tours costing £25 will be given Monday to Friday. To book call 020 8995 0508.
