Flood alerts have been placed across south London as the area is set to see some heavy rain with thunderstorm warnings.
The government alert affects the Beverley Brook area in the boroughs of Merton, Sutton, Kingston, Richmond, and Wandsworth as the Pyl Brook stream, which runs through each of those boroughs, is set to rise today (Tuesday, October 8).
The government alert also affects the Ravensbourne area in the boroughs of Lewisham, Bromley, Greenwich and Croydon.
Water levels of the River Quaggy, Kyd Brook, Chaffinch Brook and Pool River, which run through each of the boroughs, are expected to rise.
The River Hogsmill area between Ewell and Kingston has also had a flood alert issued.
A flood alert has also been issued for the River Wandle area, which runs through the boroughs of Sutton, Croydon, Merton, Lambeth, and Wandsworth.
Flooding is forecasted to impact low-lying land near the river this afternoon and overnight.
While property flooding is unlikely, the government is prepared to issue warnings is needed.
It is recommended that motorists plan their driving routes to avoid low-lying roads near rivers, which could be flooded.
People should not try to walk around or drive through flood water.
The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning until 10pm tonight (Tuesday).
It comes after heavy rain on Monday brought big downpours in some places, surface water on the roads and lightning and hail.
The Met Office warns Londoners could expect flooding, leading to some damage to buildings or structures.
There could also be some damage to a few buildings and structures from lightning strikes as well as delays to train services and a short-term loss of power.
A spokesperson from the Environment Agency said in regard to each of these boroughs: “We are closely monitoring the situation.
“Our incident response staff are out on the ground checking and clearing any blockages and debris from the river.
“Please stay aware in case further warnings are issued.”
