A second child has died from their injuries after a car crashed into the building of the Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon.
On Thursday (July 6), at around 10am, police and other emergency services were called to the scene of The Study Prep School in Camp Road in Wimbledon, following reports that a Land Rover had crashed into the building.
Police deployed a total of 35 vehicles and were joined by ambulance crews from London Fire Brigade, as well as London Air Ambulance and crews from London Fire Brigade.
Eight-year-old Selena Lau died from her injuries following the crash, and a second child has been named.
The second girl who died has been named as eight-year-old Nuria Sajjad.
A woman in her 40s remains in hospital in a serious condition.
Others were injured, including a seven-month-old girl who was taken to hospital, although police say her injuries were later assessed as “non-life threatening.“ The driver of the car, a 46-year-old woman from Wimbledon, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
The woman was later taken to hospital, where her condition was assessed as non-life threatening.
She has been bailed until a date in July pending further enquiries.
Police say enquiries are still ongoing.
In a statement, Nuria’s family described her as kind, joyful and generous, and thanked the staff at St George’s Hospital, fellow parents and school staff for their support.
Their full statement said: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Nuria on Sunday, 9 July 2023. Nuria was the light of our lives.
“She embodied joy, kindness and generosity and she was loved by all around her.
“We would like to thank the efforts of the emergency services, all the extraordinary staff at St George’s Hospital, the parents of Nuria’s class fellows and staff of the Study Prep for all they have done to ease Nuria’s journey.
“We request that our privacy is respected at this difficult time.”
