Richmond Council leaders and MPs have expressed "disappointment" that Park Lane Stables RDA has been forced to move from their Teddington home.
Earlier this year, there was widespread support in the borough for the charity stables’ publicity campaign to fundraise the £1m needed to purchase their stables.
Despite the success of their campaign, the popular charity will have to quit the site as the landlord claims to have received a higher offer for the site.
From 1 June 2021, the stables has operated on a temporary basis from Manor Farm Stables in Petersham, Richmond.
In spite of this setback, Cllr Roberts has urged the landlord to honour their original ask.
Sadly we need to find a new location after negotiation with the landlord failed to secure the purchase of our home in Teddington. We’ll be at Manor Farm Stables in Petersham in the interim. #ParkLaneStablesWalkingOn Read our press release: https://t.co/B9FKR7z57g pic.twitter.com/1I2zoCJu7w

Cllr Gareth Roberts, Leader of Richmond Council, said:
“This is really sad news for Park Lane Stables and devastating for the staff, volunteers and families, many with vulnerable children, that rely on the stables.
“Their fundraising plight received national coverage and support. And I know that there will be hundreds, if not thousands, of people angry that despite their efforts, it wasn’t enough to secure the long-term future of the stables on the site in Teddington. People will feel cheated.
“I hope the Landlord will recognise the strength of local feeling, recognise the importance the work done by Park Lane Stables, particularly in supporting Riding for the Disabled, and honour the original ask.”
Twickenham MP, Munira Wilson, added the community stables were a "lifeline" for many local families.
She said: “It is with great sadness that I hear the news today of the eviction of Park Lane Stables. I know from talking to local residents how cherished the stables are by the community in Teddington, Twickenham and far beyond.
“Natalie and her team have worked tirelessly on the campaign to raise enough money to purchase the property and save the charity, and the British public have shown overwhelming generosity.
“Everyone at the stables continues to explore all options to reverse this eviction or find a suitable alternative site. Given the importance of these special stables to the local community and the limited options for development, I urge the landlord to think again. Park Lane Stables continue to have my full support in their efforts to retain this valued service within the area."
A spokesman for the landlord said: “We are acutely aware of the importance of the service provided by Park Lane Stables and the benefit of that work to the community.
“While we regret the personal circumstances that have forced us to seek new ownership for the stables, we will continue to work to seek an acceptable resolution for all parties involved, and remain committed to supporting the continued services on site whilst the situation is ongoing.”
