A restaurant and tearoom in Twickenham has won a “gold star” award for sustainable gastronomy.
In a new category announced by the Michelin Guide on Monday (Jan 25), Petersham Nurseries was featured in the UK’s top eco eateries.
The Church Lane institution was recognised for its consciously sourced produce and environmental ethos.
Nestled inside a greenhouse overflowing with plants, Petersham Nurseries is part garden centre part restaurant.
The family business was born in 1997 when Gael and Francesco Boglione moved their family from central London to Richmond.
Their new home, Petersham House, overlooked a local plant nursery which had been carved out of the grounds of Queen Anne’s former home.
The couple opened a restaurant which became known for slow sustainable food.
Lara Boglione, Managing Director of Petersham Nurseries, and Gael Boglione, co-founder of Petersham Nurseries said:
“We’re extremely grateful for the recognition from Michelin on our commitment to sustainably and humbled to have received a green star earlier this week.
“We take care in all aspects of the business, by sourcing the best seasonal ingredients for our restaurants, much of which comes from our own family farm in Devon, by growing our own flowers with no chemical intervention, by minimising our waste, composting and recycling and working towards a no plastic model.”
“We are always looking for ways to reduce our footprint, protect the environment and give back to the communities we work alongside.
“This approach is integral to how we operate and in turn we hope to demonstrate to others that you can succeed as a business in a natural and environmentally correct way.”
