The founder of Twickenham charity Hands has retired after 38 years at the helm.

Maureen Payan set up the organisation on 1977 after being moved by the plight of elderly housebound people.

She advertised in shops for neighbours to provide a Christmas dinner for those in need and Hands - Help a Neighbour in Distress Scheme - was born.

Ms Payan also launched the annual May Bank Holiday Charities Fair on Twickenham Green in 1981, as well as being made an MBE for her services to the community in 2009.

Volunteers at Hands take on jobs not covered by statutory services, such as shopping, outings and even simple tasks such as changing lightbulbs.

The charity receives about 250 requests each month and has 120 volunteers.
