Name: Tanya Williams

Party: Green Party

Constituency: Twickenham

Name one thing you will proactively change in the constituency if you are elected.

Twickenham’s housing problem is really serious, it’s too expensive to buy and rent and people who grew up here can’t afford to live in the area. I would scrap the Right to Buy scheme and build more social housing, and introduce more protection for tenants.

What has been your proudest achievement within the constituency in the last three years?

I am proud of working at Twickenham’s rough sleepers’ winter night shelter, making beds and simple meals and keeping people alive in freezing conditions. I learned how austerity hurts us. One homeless client was discharged from hospital with wounds needing professional attention. This situation is disgraceful in a wealthy country.

What sets you apart from your fellow prospective parliamentary candidates?

I am the only candidate serious about tackling climate change. Greens want urgent transition to renewable energy while creating jobs.
Our policies are joined up sensibly to reduce inequality and promote wellbeing. We support decent wages and job security, fair rents, affordable public transport and free university education.

What has been the most difficult conversation you have had while canvassing?

One person said that he loves the Green policies but won’t vote Green because he wants to keep another party out of power. I said that voting Green shows other parties that our policies have widespread support and should be taken seriously.

Why should people in Twickenham vote for you?

I've lived and worked locally for 20 years and know and love Twickenham and its people. I am a new candidate offering fresh ideas and the vision of a clear political alternative. I also have the experience and knowhow of a serious contender. Voters need both.
