Hot to trot from their sell-out show at the Royal Opera House, the BalletBoyz will plié and pirouette on to the stage at Richmond Theatre this month.
Distinctive for its all-male troupe, the BalletBoyz’ groundbreaking project the Talent returns for another year, starting their tour in April right until June.
The company is the brainchild of former Royal Ballet maestros, Michael Nunn OBE and William Trevitt OBE, who mentored and coached raw talent from across the country, creating a group of first-rate performers for the show.
Among the Billy Elliots of Britain, Bradley Waller is due to perform in two new commissions, the Murmuring by Alexander Whitley, and Mesmerics by Christopher Wheeldon.
The 23-year-old dancer, who joined as an apprentice with the company three years ago, says the pieces come from two very different places, exploring the seamless ebb and flow of movement in one and reinvention and technique in the other.
Waller indicates that the Murmuring is his favourite composition.
Just like the name, he says: "It’s like a shoal of fish or flock of birds moving together as one unit. It has deep undertones but there’s not really a narrative as such."
While Mesmerics, he claims, is much more challenging because it had originally been created in 2004 for three men and two women but had now been reworked for eight men.
Dancing with a man for the first time came as a shock to the system for the Richmond native.
Waller, who took up dance relatively late at 16, says: "It’s rougher around the edges. I’d only ever been partnered with women up until then and I remember lifting [a man] and thinking he was so much heavier but with two guys there is an equal balance."
Nunn and Trevitt, who assembled the 10-person troupe in 2001, have had rave reviews since bringing together muscular grace and masculine glissades on London’s dance scene.
Waller says both he and the entire cast felt very fortunate for working under their guise.
"The way they guide us and support us, they do quite a lot for us," he says, adding there is still much more in store for the BalletBoyz this year.
