Supermarkets, delis and restaurants will be made to give information about their products for people with allergies.

New EU rules, which come into force on December 13, mean shops and cafes will have to tell customers either verbally, or with food labels, which allergens their products contain.

There are 14 allergens in total on the EU list, including seafood, peanuts, celery and gluten.

Previously, supermarkets, delis and cafes did not have to provide the information.

The changes will be monitored by Croydon Council and the Food Standards Agency.

The council said the number of people affected by allergies was on the increase, and that the main cause of food allergy deaths was down to food eaten outside the home when ingredients were not declared.
