Twickenham Museum received £9,500 from Heritage Lottery Funding (HLF) for its Football at the Front project.
Awarded through HLF’s Then and Now programme, the project looks at the 1914 Christmas truce that inspired rifleman Frank Edwards to kick a football ahead of the Battle of Loos in 1915.
His act stirred Twickenham Captain Wilfred "Billie" Nevill to do the same on the first day of the Somme in July 1916.
Twickenham Museum trustee Ed Harris said: "We are thrilled to have received the support of the HLF and look forward to involving as many of the local community as we can in commemorating two largely unknown local heroes who played the greater game."
On December 4, Twickenham Museum partners the Royal Military School of Music at Kneller Hall in a reenactment of the 1914 Christmas Truce involving British and German schoolchildren and serving soldiers.
In June 2015, a play will performed at the Hampton Hill Playhouse based on the story of the Footballer of Loos.
Subsequent exhibitions at the Twickenham Museum in September 2015 and July 2016 will highlight the lives of Frank Edwards and Billie Nevill.
