Student midwives hope to set a new Guinness world record and raise awareness of maternal death rates.
Health care logistics charity Motorcycle Outreach teamed up with the midwives for their Precious Cargo Project, which will see them tour hospitals and maternity units collecting donations and signatures on a scroll.
The project hopes to raise money to help Motorcycle Outreach, which works in developing countries to provide maintained motorcycles for healthcare workers to access remote villages.
Members of the Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes will support the project by transporting the scroll between 40 hospitals across the country.
The group set off on their journey from Hampton Court Palace on Saturday, September 28, and plan to finish their tour by the end of November.
Sheonagh Ravensdale of the Precious Cargo Project said: “It was absolutely fantastic. It was a huge success. Our Blood Biker took the scroll off and it’s on its way now.
“Student midwives will be doing things at each hospital like bed pushes to get the signatures and donations going. We are hoping it will really take off.”
The UK tour is a pilot project and if successful the scroll will embark on an international journey expected to begin in the new year.
