Teachers and children at Radnor House school enjoyed a day off schedule as part of Make a Difference Day (Madd).

On Wednesday, events supporting worthy local causes followed the success of last year's inaugural Madd event.

All 320 children as well as staff were based off site, spending the day helping either a charity or community organisation.

The activities ranged from path laying at Orleans House to potato picking at a Sikh Community Centre.

They were placed at more than 23 different organisations, ranging from local groups such as the Mullberry Centre for cancer support to Age UK.

Also this year, children were placed at a number of special needs schools such as Strathmore School in Petersham.

Parents played their part as well, collecting for Kingston & Wimbledon Foodbanks and preparing for The Great Big Madd Bake Off event.

Another new addition to this year’s event was the Madd tea party for the elderly, hosted at the school.

Children assisted the school chef in preparing the food while special guest Harry Mayhead, the pearly king of Bow Bells Cheapside and Blackfriars, entertained as special guest.

Radnor House headteacher David Paton said: “The day was a huge success and underlines the importance we place on serving the wider community.

“Pupils were thrown together with people they would never normally meet and encouraged to understand how many disparate sections of society live and work on a daily basis.”

In addition to the community work, staff and pupils also raised more than £800 for the Mulberry Centre and have forged links with dozens of other charity workers and volunteers across the borough.
