An extra 200 buildings and features in the borough, including a horse trough, water tower and Edward VIII pillar box, are now protected.

Richmond Council has now designated more than 12,000 structures as being of townscape merit, which means they will be preserved for years to come.

The buildings selected may not be of sufficient interest to warrant listing by the Secretary of State for culture, media, and sport but are still thought to contribute to the character of the borough.

Richmond’s cabinet member for environment, Councillor Pamela Fleming, said: “Richmond is the most beautiful borough in London and we know how important it is to our residents that we protect and enhance the environment.

“We will do everything we can to conserve its fascinating historical, architectural, and environmental beauty so residents and visitors can continue to enjoy its beauty for years to come.”

When considering proposals for alteration or extension of townscape merit properties owners have to ensure they do not detract from the character of the building.
