Spending the night sleeping under the roof of a majestic palace is a dream for many and for one night only Hampton Court Palace is making that dream come true.
Visitors are being invited to join Queen Elizabeth I and her court for a sleepover at her father King Henry VIII’s Tudor palace, which they both once called home.
The slumber party at the scene of Henry’s infamous marital highs and lows will transport people back to the 1590s, when Shakespeare picked up his quill for the first time, Drake conquered the Spanish Armada and Sir Walter Raleigh journeyed to the New World in the name of his Queen.
Throughout the evening people can enjoy Elizabethan entertainments including dancing lessons in the Great Hall and Great Watching Chamber - once the scene for masques and plays staged for the Queen.
Visitors will get the chance to tour the palace with the state apartment warders and hear tales of the superhuman effort it took to feed the Elizabethan court in the great kitchens.
After dark the more mysterious underbelly of the Virgin Queen’s England will be explored, from Sir Francis Walsingham’s network of spies to Dr John Dee’s dalliances with the occult.
Guests will be treated to Elizabethan-themed food for dinner served in the privy kitchen, where meals were once prepared for the Queen’s table.
Those who dare can also journey into the murky world of Elizabethan magic with the Queen’s astrologer Dr John Dee before snuggling down to bed in the palace’s Cartoon Gallery.
Sleepover at Hampton Court Palace, from 6.30pm on Friday, September 27, to 9am on Saturday, September 28. Minimum age 16 years. Tickets £100.
