Ice skating will return to Twickenham with a temporary rink at York House this winter.

Twickenham Alive received planning permission for the rink last year, despite residents’ objections, but it came too late to be organised.

However it will be in place ready to open on November 30 and will run for six weeks in the grounds of York House.

It marks the return of skating to the town after the closure of the old permanent ice rink in east Twickenham in 1992.

Twickenham Alive’s co-founder Berkley Driscoll says: “We have had a great deal of support from people saying they cannot wait.

“All the funding comes from businesses in the Twickenham area and it’s all about the regeneration of the town centre with people visiting shops and cafes.

“It has been a long process getting all the approval in place - there are a lot of people who remember the old rink and regret its demise.”

The management of the rink will include former figure skaters and members of the now defunct Richmond Flyers ice hockey team.

Mr Driscoll says: “It’s based on the rink near the London Eye but is smaller than the one at Hampton Court.

“It will be ideal whether you are a seasoned skater or there with small children just starting out.”

As part of the festivities, there will also be other activities such as Shetland pony rides and Santa’s grotto.
