John Altman, aka Nasty Nick from EastEnders, will give a talk at an event to teach about the early signs of dementia to mark World Alzheimer’s Month.

Altman, who has firsthand experience of dementia, will join a number of people and organisations in raising awareness of dementia and provide information to emphasise the benefits of early diagnosis and recognition of dementia.

Action on: Memory Loss will be held in Clarendon Hall, York House, Twickenham, on September 19, and is hosted by Richmond Clinical Commissioning Group, Alzheimer’s Society and Richmond Council.

There will also be a performance from the Sunny Arts Theatre Company and talks from the council at the event.

Altman said: “I have had firsthand experience of dementia as my father developed it towards the end of his life. More recently I lost a close friend who had Lewy bodies dementia.

“Having supported him through that journey, raising awareness of dementia has become a cause close to my heart and I am happy to share my experiences at this important event and hopefully help people understand a little more about this illness.”

Lynn James, support services manager for Alzheimer’s Society in Richmond added: “There are currently 2,000 people with dementia living in Richmond. However, many of those with the condition and their carers are not in touch with any support services.

“Dementia support services can help families to live well with the experience of dementia and we would urge people to get in touch so they don’t have to cope alone.”
