Richmond’s rich and vibrant history will be celebrated throughout September in a series of events for a new heritage festival.

The first Know Your Place festival, organised by Richmond Council, will run right through the month and offer something on nearly every day of September.

Programme highlights include a history quiz held in the Riverside Room of the Old Town Hall, where families can test their knowledge of the people, places and history of the borough.

Residents will have the rare opportunity to peek behind the scenes for a tour with the borough’s archivist and discover the work that goes into acquiring, cataloguing, preserving, and making accessible the heritage of Richmond.

If you are feeling adventurous and competitive there are prizes up for grabs for those willing to take part in a treasure trail that will lead you across the borough in search of historical documents with clues revealed online.

A series of walks will also lead families to undiscovered corners of the borough and talks will inform on a range of topics, including a talk by Stephen Twining on 300 years of tea.

Richmond Council’s cabinet member for business, community and culture, Councillor Pamela Fleming, said: “Richmond has a wealth of cultural heritage and there really is no better way of unearthing its hidden secrets than taking in the Know Your Place festival, another fantastic initiative by our libraries.

“With an action packed programme for children and young people as well as adults, we’re certain this first ever event will be a great success and will become a permanent feature in the borough’s cultural calendar.”
