The sound of air raid sirens will signal the start of a 1940s variety show as the Blitz comes to Hampton Hill.

The Groovy Gazza production of A Salute to the 1940s promises the audience a good old-fashioned entertainment and a trip back in time for one night only.

Producers Gary Birtles and Lorrie Brown have been touring the country with the show for the past four years.

Brown says: “We’ve got several acts performing tributes to some of the biggest names from the 40s including Vera Lynn, George Formby, Gracie Fields, the Andrews Sisters and Flanagan and Allen.”

Brown has just been voted the UK’s top Vera Lynn tribute act after 15 years in the role and will perform hits including White Cliffs of Dover, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, Yours, You’ll Never Know and We’ll Meet Again.

Brown says performing on the pitch at West Ham United during half time on Remembrance Sunday in 2009 stands out as a highlight.

She says: “It was amazing singing to 33,000 people and hearing them all join in with We’ll Meet Again.

“The other highlight was spending two years touring with the legendary Danny La Rue, performing in venues like, St David’s Hall, in Cardiff, Bournemouth Pavilion and Northampton’s Derngate Theatre.”

Birtles keeps the cast in check as air raid warden Braithwaite.

He says: “The variety halls and theatres kept the public’s morale up during the blitz, with many shows carrying on through the bombing.

“It’s a huge part of our history and Vera Lynn travelled out to the war zones to keep the troops entertained.”
