A storage design and construction company has been awarded £1,500 for employing an apprentice from Brooklands College.

Steel Storage Europe, based in Twickenham, needed to fill a skills gap and found that the apprenticeship framework was ideal for bringing younger employees into the workforce and would allow them to benefit from the knowledge of their staff.

Anita Winter, apprentice manager at Brooklands College, visited the firm this week to present them with the Government grant cheque.

Rachel Steed, chief financial officer, said: “The one off payment of £1,500 and the free government-funded college based training was a great incentive to employ an apprentice and we found that the training offered at Brooklands College suited our workforce needs.”

Apprentices learn on the job for a minimum of four days a week and spend one day a week in college learning the skills for their chosen industry.

Five other grant cheques of £750 have also been handed out by Brooklands College to employers that have chosen the college as their apprenticeship training provider.

The grant incentive is available to businesses that have less than 1,000 employees, are new to apprenticeships or have not enrolled a new recruit or employee in to an apprenticeship programme in the past 12 months.
