A volunteer who helps run a sight loss support group in Richmond has been nominated for a national award.

Jill Mason of Evelyn Road in Ham, is in the running for the chairman’s award for volunteering as part of the Macular Society’s awards for excellence.

The nomination recognises her hard work and dedication in her role leading the charity’s local support group.

Mrs Mason said: “I was delighted when I found out I had been nominated, but I feel it is for the whole team, not just me.

“I couldn’t do what I do without the lovely committee, who have all become my good friends.”

The Macular Society has more than 270 support groups across the UK, all aiming to increase the confidence and independence of people affected by central vision loss.

The group meets at Gretsy Hall in Richmond, and has been run for four years by Mrs Mason, who is affected macular degeneration, a condition that affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK.

Mrs Mason said: “Our group outings are important. People sitting around in chairs don’t bond as well as people going out on a trip together.

“I work hard for the group out of gratitude and because they are lovely.”
