A drive to encourage people to find out more about Hampton Hill has unearthed a piece of family history.
St James’s Church, in Hampton Hill, produced a booklet called New Hampton and Hampton Hill in Victorian and Edwardian Times as part of its 150th anniversary celebrations.
The booklet urges people to dig out old photos and take part in a competition to find out more about the area to win prizes including restaurant meals, food and drink.
Robin Proctor took the chance to find out more about his family because his maternal grandparents, Charles and Emma Oatway, lived at Kenilworth, in the high street, in the early part of the last century.
With the help of local historian John Sheaf he managed to work out that his mother Edith attended Twickenham County School for Girls from a photo of her fifth form class taken in 1913 or 1914.
The booklet, which includes 65 photos, is available in shops, pubs and restaurants in Hampton Hill and Hampton as well as at Squires Garden Centre and Waterstone’s in Teddington.
