A serial rapist who traumatised the lives of seven women has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Brian Witty was found guilty on all three new charges of rape, on women aged 19 at the time, on majority verdicts.

Judge Nicholas Price QC branded Witty an “arrogant sexual predator” when he sentenced him at Kingston Crown Court this afternoon.

He told him he will serve a minimum of 12 years of the life sentences, which will run concurrently.

The 42-year-old, from Teddington, was already serving an eight year sentence last year after he was convicted of a string of sex attacks.

Three women came forward after seeing coverage of Witty’s case in the press.

Judge Price, who also sentenced Witty last year, said: “When I sentenced you in April 2012 I said then that there was no doubt in my mind that you present a very real threat to women.

“I had no idea how prophetic those words would prove to be.

“I said then that the impact statements of those women spoke in harrowing terms of the long term consequences of your attacks on them.”

The first of the new offences happened in 1989, when Witty traced an old acquaintance to her university halls, went to her room and raped her, punching her repeatedly.

He then raped another 19-year-old in 1997 in a house they were both staying in.

He came downstairs in the night and pulled the victim from the sofa, where she was sleeping, and raped her.

He raped another woman on New Year’s Eve when he offered her a place to stay. She made it clear she did not want sex, but he raped her when they arrived at his house.

The judge said: “You were bullying. You were controlling. You were manipulative. You traumatised and devastated their lives.

“Your callous indifference to each of these victims speaks volumes about your character.

“You have shown yourself to be an arrogant sexual predator who was determined to indulge and fulfil your own sexual desires.

“You treated them with utter contempt and with each woman you wore no condom, which in itself was an exacerbating feature.

“You knew that each was telling the truth. You showed no compassion in your decision to challenge their allegations.

“I have no doubt that you will continue to protest your innocence on these charges.”

He told Witty he was a “prolific rapist” before he ordered the prison guard to “let him go down”.

He praised the jury for reaching their verdict during such a harrowing case.

He said: “You have performed, if I may say so without sounding patronising, admirably.”

Detective constable Peter Sullivan, the investigating officer from the Metropolitan Police’s sexual offences, exploitation and child abuse command, said: “The women in this and Witty’s previous trial have been incredibly courageous.

“By revisiting these traumatic experiences and providing evidence against Witty, they have ensured that justice can be served and he has been held to account for many years of offending.

“I have great admiration for the dignity and fortitude they have shown throughout the court proceedings.

“Witty is a serial rapist who is arrogant in the extreme and has shown absolutely no contrition for his crimes.

“Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, he made these women - and in some cases their families - give lengthy evidence, further compounding the distress and trauma he had already caused.

“He has left a legacy of pain and suffering which will live with many of them for the rest of their lives.

“The consistency of his offending over several decades shows that he will always be threat to women and therefore I applaud the life sentence which was passed today.”

Detective chief inspector Seb Florent, of the same command, said: “This is the second time that Witty has been found guilty of several rapes that occurred over a period of years.

“I would like to pay tribute to the bravery and determination of the women who have come forward and ensured that justice has been done in both these trials.”

Sally-Anne Russell, CPS London reviewing lawyer, said: “Witty’s predatory behaviour towards his victims has proved him to be dangerous and prolific sexual offender.

“Witty has consistently denied all the offences put before the court but for a second time the jury has seen through his lies and convicted him of his crimes."
