The first stage of the redevelopment of Twickenham town centre is set to begin on June 10, Richmond Council has announced.
The first step will begin with the installation of York stone paving slabs in York Street.
While the work is taking place, there will be a temporary relocation of a bus stop in York Street to the west of Garfield Road and pay and display parking bays will be removed as part of the work.
Once the work is complete, bus stops will be provided on both sides of York Street, replacing the parking bays.
Cabinet member for highways and street scene Councillor Chris Harrison said: “Twickenham has seen a gradual decline in recent years and in all our surveys and consultations over the past few years residents have almost unanimously voiced their concern.
“I am now thrilled that the work on the town centre is about to begin. As with any road or pavement work however, there is the possibility of some delay and inconvenience, we have tried to keep this to a minimum – but if residents or businesses are concerned, they should contact the council.”
The next phase of improvement works will include pavement widening in King Street and London Road, improved crossing points with pedestrian countdown, cycle lanes, a 20mph limit throughout the town centre and new bus stops with real time information.
